The right eye care for wrinkles, dark circles and dry skin

by Lena Severin

Why does the skin around the eyes need special care?

Or to put it another way: Do the eyes actually need special care? We get asked this question a lot. And our answer is: Yes, because the needs and structure of the skin here are simply a little different. It is much thinner than in the rest of the face, 0.5 mm to be precise. That is in comparison to 1.75-2.5 mm in the entire face. The structure of the eye area is also a little different, because the skin here has less subcutaneous fat and fewer sebaceous and sweat glands, which means it dries out more quickly and loses elasticity.

Another aspect that we tend to ignore because it is as natural to us as breathing is blinking. This causes the thin skin that surrounds our eyes to move quite a bit. In addition, not only the eyes themselves, but also the delicate skin around them is stressed by screen work, air-conditioned or heated rooms and lack of sleep. Of course, we can only influence our work environment to a limited extent. I am also writing this article on my laptop, looking at the square light field five days a week. Not to mention the unimaginable loss of all the nights in which you have conversations that are far too long, dance until your feet are sore or just watch films until the sun comes up again... after all, life is meant to be enjoyed.

Nevertheless, our skin needs the attention it deserves. And for the eye area, that means choosing the care you need with a little more attention. And that brings me to the next question that we often get:

Which eye care is the best?

As always, it all depends on the needs of your skin. We have an eye cream and, more recently, a hyaluronic eye gel, which provides comprehensive care for the eye area. The eye cream is particularly suitable for dry, flaky skin around the eyes or for anyone who simply wants rich care. The eye gel is much lighter and provides the skin with moisture thanks to the hyaluronic acid it contains. Bonus effect: the metal ball gently massages the skin in the morning, which helps the lymphatic fluid drain away better. The de-puffing effect works best when the eye gel comes fresh from the fridge. But which eye care is right for you? Let's take a closer look at the active ingredients and what they can do for you:

OUR HYALURONIC EYE GEL

For an uncomplicated, pleasant application. Absorbs quickly and provides your skin with active ingredients that give it moisture and radiance.

Hyaluronic acid in eye gel: moisture & radiance

You may already know hyaluronic acid from our creams or our hyaluronic acid concentrate . Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in our bodies, so it is not a foreign substance. You can imagine it as a network of molecular chains. The whole network works like a sponge, binding water and basically pulling it along on its way into the deeper layers of the skin. And this is how hyaluronic acid works in skin care:

  • Provides intensive moisture and protects the skin from drying out
  • Reduces dryness wrinkles and plumps up the skin from the inside
  • The moisture depot ensures better skin elasticity

Algae complex in eye gel: antioxidant power

The eye gel is not the first product in which we have used an algae extract. Our antioxidant ampoules contain astaxanthin, also an active ingredient from a type of algae. In the gel, we chose brown and red algae because of their versatile benefits, especially for the eye area. And this is what they can do for your skin in the eye gel:

  • help lighten dark eye circles
  • have a decongestant effect and reduce visible bags under the eyes
  • can reduce fine lines and wrinkles
  • have a skin-soothing effect

OUR EYE CREAM

Rich care that supplies your skin with nutrients and lipids. With ingredients that counteract tired eyes.

Vitamin C in eye cream: goodbye shadows, hello bright eyes

Vitamin C is a popular ingredient in eye care. You may know it from our vitamin C serum or our ampoules, for those who are more experienced with active ingredients. The serum is also suitable for sensitive skin, as we use a derivative (ascorbyl glucoside) that is only converted into active vitamin C in the skin itself with the help of an enzyme. And we use exactly this derivative in our eye cream. And this is how it works:

  • Has an antioxidant effect and thus protects our collagen structure
  • Additionally supports the formation of skin-tightening vitamin E
  • Gradually lightens dark shadows & pigment spots

Caffeine in the gel and cream:

We all know that some people cannot imagine life without caffeine as a pick-me-up. “Nothing works before the first coffee” – are you one of those people? Welcome to the club. If not, then perhaps the effect of caffeine in cosmetics will convince you. The effectiveness here is not about the concentration of caffeine in the product, but rather the amount of caffeine released and the formulation. Some studies have tested and proven skin penetration as the key to use in cosmetics. A particularly high caffeine content will not give the skin the same “kick” as a double espresso. Nevertheless, it has wonderful properties, especially in eye care:

  • Caffeine affects blood flow in the smallest blood vessels
  • Reduction of swelling of the tissue around the eyes
  • Reduces the formation of free radicals

10 tips for your eye care

1. A question of timing: Ideally, start eye care in your mid-20s

Eye care from the mid-20s? Exactly, because during this period the skin begins to age slowly: The enzyme responsible for the breakdown of collagen becomes more and more active, while the building blocks (ceramides & collagen) for a stable framework of the skin can no longer be produced as quickly. A process that is completely natural and that we definitely cannot stop. BUT we can specifically help the skin to resume its production speed and supply it with the nutrients and active ingredients that keep its structure healthy and stable. If we start early and do not ignore the other tips, the skin will thank us.

2. Use eye care morning and evening

The same applies to eye care as to other facial care: it should be used in the morning and evening. Ideally after cleansing. If you use a facial oil such as argan, jojoba or squalane, you can give your entire face a relaxing massage and gently pat the oil in under the eyes. Important here: eye care should be applied before the oil. The layering principle works from light textures to rich textures. An oil is therefore the final step in the care process (unless sunscreen is applied).

3. Against swollen eyes in the morning: Gentle tapping massage

Speaking of massage: You can help your lymphatic ducts under your eyes to drain the accumulated fluid with a tapping massage in the morning (or in between). To do this, gently tap with your ring finger from the inner corner of your eye outwards and then in the same direction along under your eyebrows. Three to four rounds are enough to achieve a decongestant effect.

4. Sun protection in every season: keep your eyes open when buying glasses!

If you've been following us for a while, you'll know that we never tire of talking about sun protection. It's simply the most important thing in skin care. And of course that also applies, or especially, to the delicate skin around the eyes. So, sunglasses with decent UVA and UVB protection should be on your nose when the sun is shining. It's really worth investing a little more money here. Because many cheap glasses have no or very little protection.

5. Touch the eye area & eyes only gently

In everyday life we like to touch our faces, which is difficult to suppress, but unfortunately means that our skin is constantly exposed to new bacteria and germs. If we wipe our eyes a lot, rub them and stretch the skin underneath, this is not good for the thin structure. Too much and especially too aggressive touching can cause the skin to become flabby more quickly. So it is better to touch with kid gloves.

6. Apply cooled eye gel in the morning

Apply cooled eye gel gently under the eye

If you have problems with puffy eyes in the morning, it helps if you store the eye gel in the fridge. This makes the metal ball and the gel extra cool and helps the lymphatic ducts to reduce swelling. Roll the gel from the inside out. If you like, you can then pat it in as explained in point 3.

7. Nutrition for swollen eyes: What you should pay attention to

Alcohol, salty foods and foods that are high in protein impede lymph flow at night, which can cause you to wake up in the morning with puffy eyes. It is difficult to avoid these foods completely, of course, but if you make sure to avoid these foods in the evening, eat them in moderation and leave enough time between eating and drinking and going to bed, it will help to keep the lymph flow going better overnight.

8. Miracle weapon sleep

One of the most common reasons for dark circles under the eyes, wrinkles, shadows, etc. is a lack of really good sleep. As already described above, it is important that we leave a few hours between our last meal and bedtime. Ideally, the bedroom should be a little cooler and darker. If you have trouble with noise, you can try white noise. The brain blocks out monotonous background noises such as rain, storms, or rustling after a while and it covers up the sudden noises from the urban environment. Also important: the pillow and mattress should match your sleeping style. Here, too, it is worth spending a little more money and getting individual advice. Because if we sleep well, not only our skin will thank us, but also our entire body and our psyche.

9. The classic: drink water

I don't think I need to say much more about that. Water is the substance that supports the processes in our body and keeps everything running smoothly. Of course, that includes the processes in our skin. So, in addition to moisturizing from the outside, let's also moisturize from the inside.

10. Meditation for targeted relaxation of the facial muscles

If you like to take a break, whether it's 5 minutes a week or every day, then meditation might be just the thing for you. Whether in the morning before you start your day or in the evening before you end it, in these minutes you can focus completely on yourself, your breathing and your passing thoughts. It's also important that you keep becoming aware of the relaxation of the small facial muscles. This is also a great exercise for the desk. Close your eyes briefly every now and then and consciously relax your whole face. I like to imagine a warm, golden stream of rain flowing over my head, my forehead, my eyebrows, the corners of my eyes and eyelids, over my cheeks and nose, on to my lips and over my chin and over my neck. This short visualization gives a fresh head, relaxes the skin and also takes away a little tiredness. Or maybe I'm just imagining the last point... Try it out now!

Conclusion: Whether eye gel or eye cream, your skin will be happy about the extra portion of care
