Our baby balm: For wind and weather!
by Leonie Poppe
Our skin is often exposed to temperature fluctuations throughout the year and still tries to keep everything in balance. Adult skin is used to this, but it is a challenge for our little ones' skin. Their own skin protection is simply not yet fully developed. That is why you can protect your baby's skin wonderfully, especially in the cold and windy season, with a special wind and weather balm.

1 Why do babies and children need an extra wind and weather balm?
The skin of newborns and children up to the age of ten is thinner and more sensitive to external influences than the skin of us adults. The subcutaneous fat is almost non-existent and the sebaceous and sweat glands are not yet working properly, which means that the skin is supplied with even less essential lipids and can therefore dry out more quickly. As a result, little ones experience temperature differences even more intensely and their skin has greater difficulty balancing them out on its own. So support is needed here to be able to keep the natural fat and moisture balance in balance in the cold months by regularly applying cream.
2 What should you consider when caring for your baby in winter?
Walks are important for parents and children, even in windy and cold weather. The body is supplied with oxygen, the immune system is strengthened and metabolic functions are boosted. The circulation and breathing are also stimulated, so it is very important to explore the world outdoors with your little explorer every day. In the first few weeks after birth, however, please do not go out in temperatures below 10 °C and, if possible, not in very strong winds. Pay particular attention to the little head, so don't forget a hat and gloves!
Oil instead of water:
Especially when it's cold outside, it's important to choose a cream with a high fat content. Water-based creams cool the skin down even more, remove even more moisture and can even freeze on the skin at very low temperatures. So look for natural lipid sources, i.e. natural plant oils such as almond oil or jojoba oil. Moisturizing bases such as shea butter or cocoa butter also ensure that moisture is stored in the skin layers and that there are sufficient lipids. Mineral oils, paraffins, parabens or irritating preservatives have no place in children's care. Ingredients that are declared as perfume should also not come into contact with baby skin as they can cause additional skin irritation.
It is therefore better to apply cream to the skin more often, but with less product, so that the cream can be absorbed better into the skin and it is well protected instead of being overwhelmed. It is important to only use as much as the skin can absorb without any problems.
3 The junglück baby balm
The junglück baby balm is rich in oleic and linoleic acids due to its combination of almond and apricot kernel oil and is therefore considered very skin-friendly for sensitive baby skin. It is quickly absorbed and supports the natural acid mantle or barrier function of the skin. The jojoba oil it contains is rich in vitamin E (tocopherol) and thus protects the cells from moisture loss. The vitamin also has an antioxidant effect and helps to better process the new environmental influences. Shea butter and cocoa butter give the balm its desired creamy consistency and make the delicate baby skin supple. Collectively, these lipids form a water-free skin protection cream that does not contain any preservatives due to its galenic properties. It forms a nourishing protective film on the skin in no time, is easy to apply and does not stick.
Calendula extract has an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effect thanks to its valuable ingredients such as carotenoids, flavonoids and saponins. Dry and irritated skin is moisturized by the power of calendula and the skin's regeneration and cell renewal are also stimulated.

4 additional tips for winter with baby
Avoid frequent bathing
Especially for babies who are still too small for sandy playgrounds etc., it is enough to bathe them once or twice a week. The skin of small babies cools down quickly, so on cold days it is better to bathe them in the evenings, then you can put your child straight into a warm bed afterwards. On days when you don't bathe, you can thoroughly clean any milk residue and the diaper area with a lukewarm washcloth in the evening before going to bed. Our baby oil or our nourishing baby lotion are ideal for aftercare .
Onion look – the best way
Just like with us adults, the so-called onion look works well for little ones too. Several thin layers on top of each other ensure that the air between them acts as an insulator and keeps us nice and warm. And conversely, if it gets too hot, you can always take off a layer of clothing. This way, your child is prepared for any temperature. ☺
Thick fleece & hot water bottle
Once draped in the stroller, little babies hardly move and usually fall asleep after just a few moments. This means they cool down more quickly and need an extra warm layer. On cold days, especially before walks, put a hot water bottle in the thick fleece sleeping bag in the stroller. This way, the little one will be cozy in her bed on wheels right from the start. If the hot water bottle is still too hot when you want to go, take it out again. Otherwise, it can stay right at the bottom of the foot area and keep warm during the walk.
Wear close to the body
Another option would be to carry the baby close to your body in a sling or a special baby carrier. In the first few months, always face you. You will give each other warmth and your baby will be taken back to the time of pregnancy. Your heartbeat, your breathing and your closeness will calm it down!
