The difference between dry and dehydrated skin

by Leonie Poppe

One, two, dry! Oh yes, who doesn't know the problem of dry skin? Everyone has probably experienced it at some point. After sunbathing on the beach or in winter. I have to admit, I'll probably have to fight with it for the rest of my life. I seem to have inherited it. Dry skin on my face, but also on my body, I'm constantly applying cream. Thanks, Mom! 😉 That's because dry skin is a skin type and can therefore be genetic.

But what I didn't know for a long time is that not all dry skin is the same. There is another term that is different from that: dehydrated skin! I suspect that many people are also talking about dehydrated skin when they say "Oh, my skin is so dry!"

In this article, I would like to briefly introduce you to the topic. You will learn…

  • What are the causes of dry and dehydrated skin
  • What effect they have on the appearance of your skin
  • Which care products are best for you

So in the normal state, the complex system of our skin works as follows:
With the help of its sebaceous glands, it produces up to 1-2 grams of fat a day. Together with water and sweat, this fat, in the form of a hydrolipid film, protects the skin from external influences and makes it resilient. This barrier also prevents the skin from drying out, because without it the moisture would simply evaporate unhindered.

If we have problems with this protective layer, the skin loses moisture and fats. And here we have actually arrived at the core difference between dry and dehydrated skin. Depending on what the skin is lacking, we have one or the other problem! Or sometimes both together.

DRY SKIN

HOW DOES DRY SKIN OCCUR?

So how does dry skin come about? The cause is, to put it simply, a lack of fats. The sebaceous glands in the deeper layers of the skin simply do not produce enough sebum, which keeps the skin supple.

And often it is actually a genetic problem! Or hormones have a hand in it again.

WHAT DOES DRY SKIN MANIFEST ITSELF?

Dry skin usually has fine pores and hardly any oily shine. Rough and cracked areas are also not uncommon. The complexion can also appear pale and lines and wrinkles can form. Dry skin is also rarely limited to the face, but also affects the skin on the entire body.

HOW DO I KNOW I HAVE DRY SKIN

In both cases, flaky, itchy and sensitive skin can occur, as well as a pale complexion and feelings of tightness.

So, to find out if you have dry or dehydrated skin, you can do the following: an hour after you have cleaned your face, press a thin cloth to the bridge of your nose and check if a fine oily spot remains. If not, then you most likely have dry skin.

WHAT DOES DRY SKIN NEED?

As a logical conclusion, dry skin needs exactly one thing: fats!

So rich and moisturising water-in-oil emulsions or simply pure plant oils are particularly suitable here. It is important to strengthen the skin's protective barrier and to help the skin to better store fats and moisture. Moisturising products are not out of place here. Because basically it is about providing the skin with everything it needs to be healthy, to look healthy and to feel healthy. These include:

  • high-quality vegetable oils
  • Shea butter
  • Squalane

YOUNG HAPPINESS FOR DRY SKIN

Almond , jojoba and argan oil are your friends for dry skin! But moisturizers like aloe vera can also help.

DEHYDRATED SKIN

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF DEHYDRATED SKIN?

Instead of “dehydrated” you could also simply say “dehydrated”. Because in comparison to dry skin, this is mainly lacking in moisture.

The outer layer of skin, the epidermis, is normally well moisturized and this keeps the skin flexible, plump and radiant. If more water than normal evaporates from the upper layers, then the skin becomes dehydrated. The so-called transepidermal water loss is simply too high! There can be several reasons for this. A damaged skin barrier, weather fluctuations and hormonal changes. But also a bath that is too hot, aggressive soaps and cleaning the skin too often.

However, since dehydrated skin is not a skin type but rather a skin condition, you can encounter dehydrated skin in combination skin, oily skin and also in dry skin. This is probably also the reason why skin types are often so difficult to define and often not so easy to distinguish.

And yes, oily skin can also be under-hydrated. In fact, that is often the case! The skin tries to compensate for the loss of moisture by overproducing sebum. Drying cleansing products are often the culprits here. It is therefore important to give the skin moisture back to bring it back into balance. There will also be a new podcast episode tomorrow on the subject of oily skin from the lovely Romy!

HOW DOES DEHYDRATED SKIN MANIFEST ITSELF?

Dehydrated skin also makes the complexion look pale and sagging. Lines that are not appropriate for the age appear on the skin, it feels tight after cleansing and is sometimes more susceptible to blemishes and acne.

WHAT DOES DEHYDRATED SKIN NEED?

What is important here are substances that can supply moisture to the skin and also bind it. But also substances that support the skin's protective layer to prevent further evaporation of moisture in the future. These include:

  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Aloe Vera
  • Sorbitol

YOUTHFUL HAPPINESS FOR DEHYDRATED SKIN

Our hyaluronic concentrate , aloe vera products and rose water provide dehydrated skin with super moisture and thus replenish its reserves!

[Mr]

So, in conclusion, I can say that you can take very good action against dehydrated skin and achieve quick results with the right care. In comparison, genetically caused dry skin is a bit tricky, but here too you can do a lot, albeit only to a limited extent, to make your skin feel better. The key here is simply to consistently supply the skin with high-quality oils and fats.
