The right skin care in winter

by Lena Severin

The autumn leaves are dwindling, and winter is slowly coming. I usually expect snow and cold soon. I don't give up hope for a white Christmas until the 24th. And that's despite the fact that I can't even remember the last time we had a real Norwegian winter wonderland at this time of year.

Hello temperature fluctuations!

So we exchange presents when it's 18 degrees (and yes, that's in Germany), complain about the warm temperatures and still enjoy the sun's rays on our faces. Then, all of a sudden, winter arrives. It's cold, wet and uncomfortable. Skis are unpacked, heaters are turned up and we swing back and forth between bitter cold and cozy warmth. But one thing in particular suffers from these irregular temperatures: our skin.

  1. Winter skin, rough spots – the right care
  2. Winter Skin 101: Protect Your Skin Barrier
  3. Winter care: your routine for soft skin
  4. Body care in winter

    1. Winter skin, rough spots – the right care

While we catch snowflakes, marvel at icicles and slide down white slopes, our skin often reacts with irritation. Dry, flaky patches, cracked backs of hands and itchy legs. No, our skin really doesn't like this time of year.

So what can you do to properly care for your skin in winter? The first step is certainly to know and understand the needs of your skin. Its reactions are actually just cries for help and a desire for attention.

So the question is, why does my skin have such a hard time in the cold? The skin is actually a pretty clever organ. It has its own protective barrier - an acid mantle that protects it from drying out, but also fends off external influences and bacteria. The prerequisite for this barrier is that our skin is healthy. That we eat healthily, are relaxed and take enough care of ourselves. But most of the time we don't take the time to do that! I often catch myself doing it. In the morning I have to rush, I have something to do in the evening and then the day is over.

But it is especially important in winter that we give our body and skin the attention it so desperately needs. In winter, the skin loses some of its protection. It releases moisture into the dry air around it and its blood circulation decreases.

The cold causes the fine blood vessels in the skin to contract, and our body sends all of its blood to the important organs to continue to supply them with the best possible nutrients. And this is precisely the supply that is then missing elsewhere: oxygen and essential nutrients are no longer transported as easily and your skin suffers. Irritation, redness and feelings of tension are not far off.

In addition, the skin's own sebum and fat production is reduced at temperatures below 8 degrees. This means less moisture, less fat, less nutrients. Really, things are anything but rosy (except for our cheeks).

We already know the reasons for stressed winter skin. But what can you do specifically to ensure that your skin stays healthy and well cared for during the cold season?

    2. Winter Skin 101: Protect your skin barrier

Just like with your clothes in winter, you can also use the onion method when it comes to skin care. Simply layer different products - from thin to thick. It is important: If you plan to be outside in the cold for a long time, then reduce the amount of moisturizers and gels you use as much as possible. In sub-zero temperatures, moisture can freeze in the outer layers of your skin and cause additional damage to your skin.

So weigh up what you are planning to do? Are you going to go on a snow hike in freezing temperatures or are you just going for a short walk? Maybe you are going to stay at home sitting next to the cozy heater?

    3. Winter care: your routine for soft skin

    Daily routine

    Step 1: Cleaning

Start by cleansing your face. If you want to clean your face with more than just water in the morning, you can use the cleansing oil. Pay particular attention to mild cleansing products - they should not foam or be soapy. This dries out the skin even more. Our cleansing oil is a great alternative for this and also provides the skin with nutrients! If you prefer to use a different texture for cleansing, I can also recommend our cleansing gel . With organic chamomile extract, it soothes your skin and smells pleasantly natural. The plant-based surfactants it contains ensure gentle but thorough cleansing.

    Step 2: Clarify

The Calendula facial toner has a calming effect on irritated winter skin. It moisturizes and relieves the skin of any remaining dirt. It also strengthens your skin's protective barrier so that valuable moisture can be stored and does not dry out so quickly due to heating air.

    Step 3: Serum/ Concentrate

After cleansing, you can apply a very thin layer of moisturizing serum. For example, our hyaluronic acid concentrate . Use it sparingly and never use it alone. Beware of the risk of frost! To successfully strengthen your skin's protective barrier, use the niacinamide serum or one of our vitamin C serums after or after the concentrate.

Step 4: Day cream & oil

Then I recommend a lipid treatment. Pure oils and moisturizing creams are best for this. They close the protective barrier and prevent the skin from losing water. For example, you can apply the hyaluronic cream and finally massage in a few drops of jojoba oil or the oil of your choice.

    Step 5: Sun protection

Sunlight is often underestimated in winter. Even on cloudy days, our skin can use the additional sun protection factor. After all, UV radiation is one of the main factors in skin aging. And who wants that?

    Evening routine

    Step 1: Cleaning

In the evening, thorough cleansing is one of the most important things. City smog, sweat and make-up prevent your skin from breathing. So free your face of everyday dirt. Just as important as in the morning: it must be a mild cleansing product that doesn't swell the skin but still cleans thoroughly. We have our cleansing oil for you . It cleans gently without stripping the skin of its moisture and important lipids. This keeps the skin's protective barrier intact, which is especially necessary on cold winter days to store nutrients and moisture.

    Step 2: Exfoliation

The AHA peeling gently removes dead skin cells from your skin and moisturizes it deep down. Be careful during pregnancy and breastfeeding, because AHA should not be used then. In all other cases, the rule is: introduce it slowly. This means initially only use the AHA peeling 1-2 times a week and gradually increase if your skin responds well to it.

    Step 3: Concentrate/ Serum

And then: moisture, moisture, moisture! The consistent temperatures of the night help you to bring your skin's water balance back into balance. Thanks to the different molecule sizes, the hyaluronic concentrate penetrates deep into the skin layers and supplies them with moisture.

    Step 4: Night care

The Hyaluron Cream Rich gives your skin enough valuable lipids. The Retinal Cream nourishes mature skin, but also impure skin. All three products provide your skin with optimal moisture and noticeably support its own regeneration. You can find out more about retinal here .

    Step 5: Oil

Our Rosehip seed oil supports the renewal of the skin and the development of the skin's protective barrier in its regenerative phase: at night. It gives you richness and supplies cold-stressed skin with important nutrients. You can also simplify the application by mixing a few drops of rosehip seed oil with your night cream on the back of your hand and then applying them together.

    For in-between

Our hemp oil mask soothes your skin and relieves inflammation after a day in the cold. It also gives it a concentrated load of moisture and helps your skin's protective barrier to regenerate. For a few relaxing minutes for your skin and your soul.

    4. Body care in winter

And of course, skin care goes far beyond our face. The rest of our body deserves at least as much attention. In addition to body lotion , you can also use natural and valuable oils . Jojoba, almond and argan oil are excellent for this. My special tip: spray your skin with the aloe vera spray before applying an oil or body lotion mixed with oil. If you apply the oils to damp skin, they will be absorbed more quickly and will not leave a greasy film.

Why put oils on damp skin, you ask? As the saying goes: like dissolves like. And the mixture of water and oil corresponds exactly to the composition of the outer layer of skin. Your own fats and water in the form of sweat. In order to absorb the fatty acids in the oils well, your skin needs the combination with water.

Personally, I love jojoba oil and it is a perfect addition to body lotion. I mix the oil with a little water in my hands and then apply it to my body. Personally, I find that applying the oil to wet skin straight after a shower is too much water.

I also make sure not to shower too hot. This protects the skin and prevents it from becoming further irritated and dehydrated. A little tip: towards the end of the shower, rinse yourself from head to toe with cold water! This stimulates the blood circulation in the skin, wakes you up and also strengthens the immune system. It doesn't get any better than that!

In exceptional situations, in the mountains and in extremely cold temperatures, a few additional rules apply: Cover as much skin as possible with warm clothing! Parts of the body that are inevitably exposed to the cold and sunlight should be protected with high SPF 50+ and occlusive (covering) water-free creams. You can use our baby balm for this, for example . This is not only good for protecting delicate baby skin from wind and weather, but also adult skin.

Incorporate these care routines into your daily routine. Take time for yourself. See it as something you are doing for yourself! Give yourself, your body and your skin the attention they deserve. Don't expect miracles (because it is and will always be winter), but small habits can not only strengthen your skin, but also brighten your mood on days when the sun goes down far too quickly.

Here’s to a beautiful and conscious winter time!

    feelings of happiness for everyone....
