Combination skin: 10 tips for caring for the most common skin type

by Lena Severin

Oily here, dry there, occasionally blemishes. These are typical signs of combination skin - the most common skin type. But what is the best way to care for my combination skin? How can combination skin become balanced? Which cream or serum can I use for my combination skin? I will address all of these questions in this article. Summarized for you in 10 practical tips.

But let’s first clarify the basics:

How do I know if I have combination skin?

These are the four skin types: oily, dry, combination skin and “normal” skin. At JUNGLÜCK, we don’t think much of the term “normal”; after all, all skin is normal, no matter what it looks like. That’s why we’ll soon be calling this skin type “balanced skin”. But back to combination skin: it’s basically a combination of oily and dry skin. Cheeks and the skin around the eyes tend to be dry, while the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) tend to be oily. In terms of skin care, this means that what works for one zone isn’t necessarily optimal for the other. But don’t worry, you don’t have to get two different skin care routines. Caring for combination skin is actually less complicated than it sounds at first.

Are you still unsure whether you really have combination skin? Our skin consultant will guide you through a short survey about your skin type, give you information about the condition of your skin and suggest some products for you. If you want to be sure, click here to take the test and then relax and read through my tips for your combination skin.

1. Tip: Cleansing – the be-all and end-all of any skin care routine

You wouldn't believe how much you can do wrong in the first step of cleansing. You should remove any cleansers that contain aggressive surfactants or alcohol from your bathroom cabinet as soon as possible. Although your skin feels wonderfully clean after cleansing, such products also remove moisture, swell up the skin barrier, and wash out valuable lipids and fats. So after cleansing, your skin has a lot more work to do to bring everything back into balance and regenerate. In the long term, this can make the dryness on your cheeks and eyes even worse. And the oily shine of your T-zone doesn't get any better either, because your skin produces a lot more sebum to rebuild the washed-out fats. So it's better to take a critical look at the shelves.
It is better to use mild cleansers such as our cleansing oil or cleansing gel . And before you ask yourself whether oil is not out of place for oily skin: No, the combination of oils and gentle sugar surfactants bind excess sebum, dirt and even make-up and clean very thoroughly, but without putting strain on the skin. The cleansing gel has a lighter texture and soothes the skin in the first step of your routine with the chamomile extract it contains.

2nd tip: Zone care – meet the needs of your combination skin

As mentioned at the beginning, you can't necessarily use the same product for your entire face. You can definitely do that in the first step of cleansing. But when it comes to creams and serums, your skin has two faces. Active ingredients from serums or moisturizers like our hyaluronic concentrate supply your entire face. But make sure to limit richer creams to your cheeks. The area around your eyes also deserves a separate eye cream. The aim is to provide dry skin with sufficient nutrients and moisture, while we rebalance the T-zone and provide it with moisture. We have put together a special combination skin care set for precisely these needs, the components of which I will introduce to you in more detail in this article.

3. Tip: Fruit acid – AHA peeling

The so-called alpha hydroxy acid sounds very dangerous at first, but it is not at all. With our AHA peeling you have a gentle fruit acid peeling that you can use two to three times a week in the evening as a leave-on product. So please do not wash it off! It penetrates deep into the skin layers and supplies it with moisture, while at the same time it has a regenerating effect by promoting the breakdown of excess sebum and dead skin cells. This means that both the oily and dry areas of your face benefit from this effect.

4. Tip: Oil for combination skin? Yes, but not every skin type!

At first, it sounds like exactly what you shouldn't do: use a facial oil if you have oily skin. But not all oils are the same. The most important thing here is the comedogenicity level. This describes whether it has a pore-clogging effect or not. Jojoba oil , for example, has a comedogenicity level of 1, which is why it is well suited for skin care. And that even applies to oily skin. It binds sebum without clogging your pores and regulates the production of sebum. Since oily skin tends to overproduce, it definitely helps to bring this process back into balance with jojoba oil.

Another oil that is also particularly suitable for oily skin is our squalane - also included in the combination skin set. Squalane is already a natural component of our skin and the lightest of our oils. Even though our oil is extracted from olives, its structure is so similar to the skin's own squalane that it is wonderfully absorbed and tolerated by the skin. This signals to your skin that it does not need to produce any more sebum and the moisture balance is balanced. As a binding agent, it transports the active ingredients of your care even better and deeper into the skin.

Tip 5: Treat pimples specifically instead of tailoring your routine to blemishes

If you often have to deal with blemishes on your combination skin, it is important that you treat them selectively. Don't immediately reach for aggressive "anti-pimple" cleansers, serums or toners. These often contain bad alcohols, potential allergens and other ingredients that harm the skin in the long term rather than helping it. It is better to treat pimples directly, for example with the pimple paste . It only dries out the pimples where they are and does not immediately affect the entire facial skin. With our pimple paste and the zinc oxide it contains, you can take care of these unpleasant companions in several ways. It has an anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effect, inhibits the inflammatory reaction and allows pimples to subside more quickly. The blue chamomile oil supports the healing process of your skin. Because in the end, a pimple is nothing more and nothing less than an inflammation.

6. Tip: Seasonal routines – winter and summer skin needs more flexible care

You may have already noticed: your skin behaves differently in winter and summer. While in summer you rely more on moisturizers such as aloe vera gel and hyaluronic acid concentrate , in winter your skin needs richer care such as day or night cream. It's no different for combination skin. So keep an eye on your skin when the seasons change and adjust your routine accordingly.

Tip 7: Antioxidants

Antioxidants are what protect our skin from free radicals, the attackers of our skin cells. They strengthen the skin's protective barrier, prevent cell damage and even increase protection against UV radiation. For your daily dose of antioxidants, we recommend one of our vitamin C serums (intensive or sensitive). Vitamin C has an anti-inflammatory effect, redness and pigment spots visibly decrease and blemishes or acne scars heal faster. It also supports the formation of vitamin E and collagen, the framework of our skin. A serum that will help your skin to find balance and be protected from environmental influences.
For an extra dose, you can treat yourself and your skin to a break with the antioxidant mask .

8. Tip: Focus on regeneration & building the skin’s protective barrier

We can help the skin with the right products so that it can be balanced and fulfil its natural functions without hindrance. You have often read about building up the skin's protective barrier and regeneration. A serum that combines both effects is our Niacinamide Serum . It regulates sebum production, which counteracts the oily side of combination skin, and stimulates the production of the skin's own ceramides, which strengthens it all around. This means that moisture can be better retained in the dry areas and your complexion is evened out. In terms of its effect, it is a good addition to the Vitamin C Serum.

9. Tip: It’s all a lifestyle question

A healthy lifestyle is of course the basis of any care. Sufficient exercise, stress relief or reduction, a balanced diet and mental hygiene are all integral parts of any holistic skin care routine. Whether you smoke or drink alcohol also plays a role for your skin.

But: everything in moderation. We don't have to become absolute health gurus. Being aware of what we put in and on our bodies is completely sufficient. And of course that includes the balance of a healthy lifestyle, which can include vegetables and the occasional chocolate, for example.

10. Tip: Drink water!

I know you've probably read this tip in all the health guides, but it's true: water keeps us going, literally. If you drink enough fluids, our body can better carry out the processes that keep it busy all day. And that includes the skin, of course. If you drink enough, you have a stable moisture balance, a more balanced complexion and, above all, a stable protective barrier (as long as we don't destroy it with surfactants and the like...)

Combination skin: care doesn’t have to be complicated

Basically, caring for combination skin isn't that much more complicated than caring for other skin types. As promised, I've already introduced you to the products from the combination skin set. This will give you a great base. You can supplement your routine with the other products mentioned in the blog as needed. If you're not quite sure, it's best to order the sample sizes of the set first. This way you can test them individually and see which combination is particularly good for your skin.
