Egbok Cambodia - Charity Engagement
by Benedikt Klarmann
WHAT IS EGBOK?
Egbokstarted in 2009 to provide teaching, accommodation, jobs and financial support for underprivileged young people in Siem Reap - Cambodia. Since then, this institution has grown into a government-approved training and education program for gastronomy and hospitality. With more than 200 employees, the initial training is to provide perspective and life skills. This is followed by training in the gastronomic sector, which is underpinned by practical work in the associated 'Spoons' cafe. The cafe not only offers an extension of the learning space, but now supports the financial outlay on which the enterprise itself is based. This not only makes the program more and more independent, but can also slowly but surely expand its commitment and take in and integrate more young people. The result is training in a safe and friendly environment without any form of exploitation in one of the poorest regions in the world.
The “Egbok Mission” not only gives something back to the people of the region and offers young people from the poorest areas a perspective, it is also run almost entirely by people from Cambodia.
WHAT DOES EGBOK DO?
Egbok takes in poor, aimless and destitute young people and orphans to give them new goals in life. The main goal is to help them help themselves and thus, in the long term, to break the cycle of poverty that prevails in Cambodia today. As one of the poorest countries in the world, Cambodia is almost forced to live off tourism. This is accepted as the driving force of the economy. In this way, Egbok is able to feed tourists with its own Cafe Spoons, transport its own culture and thus ensure the long-term survival of the organization.
To introduce the young people to this approach, they go through a 3-stage process that teaches them the basic principles of independent living, hospitality and the craft of gastronomy. The gastronomic approach was chosen because the “Egbok Mission” is viable through tourism. Above all, however, because it promotes both independent and team-oriented work and thinking. Gastronomy also breaks down cultural, regional and national boundaries without having to neglect one's own traditions and enables work around the world.
HOW DO WE SUPPORT EGBOK?
While all the other commitments mentioned have a clear connection to our brand philosophy, supporting Egbok is more of a matter of the heart. We have already been there and are very impressed by how poor young people are not only given a perspective for the future, but are also being given the opportunity to be self-determined.
Without the possibility of self-determination, it would not have been possible for Junglück to continue on the path he has taken so far and to make his own vision a reality in the future. For us, self-determination is a virtue that needs to be spread. Where could this virtue be better supported than in an institution that not only offers street children a perspective through training, but also a choice in their career later on?
