Skin care in autumn: Why skin needs seasonal care

by Lena Severin

September, October, November... Autumn is in full swing, even if it arrived a little later this year. But when it gets bitterly cold, the wind nibbles unpleasantly at our skin and we want to zip up our jackets to our chins, we have to think of something to combat the autumn air. What does this mean for skin care? Do I need a different skin care routine for each season?

Autumn means change - also for the skin. Because while the thermometer goes down and the pinwheels in the front gardens pick up speed, the skin longs for more richness and protection. Nourishing serums, hydrating concentrates and light textures of summer care are no longer enough in the colder seasons. Creams, oils, body lotions, scarves and wool sweaters can find their way back out of their summer hiding place. Autumn care means strengthening the skin's protective barrier, supplying moisture and, above all, time to really enjoy skin care in order to unwind a little.

The answer to the question in the headline, in short: Yes. Here you can find out why your skin's needs change, how you can adapt your care and get your skin through the transition phase and the autumn that follows.

1. Skin in autumn: Why does the skin change throughout the year?

The basic structure of your skin does not change over the course of the year. What does change, however, are its needs. Your skin is affected by external influences such as wind, weather, temperature, humidity and sunlight. And if your skin's needs are not met, it can react with dryness, oily shine or blemishes, for example.

While in summer we have to ensure that we maintain the skin's moisture balance - namely with light textures such as serums and concentrates - in autumn and even more so in winter we have to ensure that we supply it with sufficient lipids. Richness is required in addition to the supply of moisture. Wind, cold temperatures and heated air in particular can dry out the skin very badly. Dryness can then lead to the skin barrier no longer being stable enough to prevent viruses and bacteria from penetrating. At the same time, the skin can no longer retain moisture well, which increases itching, flaking and a feeling of tightness. You can see the consequences of a disrupted skin barrier in the graphic below:

You may already notice that the right care can keep your skin healthy, regardless of the weather or the current calendar. It is therefore important that you learn to understand your skin. This way you can respond specifically to its needs and notice when you should start using a day cream and when a light serum is enough. And don't worry, seasonal care does not have to mean having to buy completely new products.

2. Update your routine: oils, creams & co. for your skin care in autumn

As already mentioned, your account doesn't have to go into shock because you have to buy completely new skin care products four times a year. Smarter skin care is the motto here! This means that you give your skin a level of richness when you change from summer to autumn. For example, by supplementing your day cream. You can also start using it only in the evening when you notice the first signs of dry skin. Depending on your needs, you can then use it later in the morning and use a nourishing oil in the evening in addition to your existing routine. You don't have to reach for the richest oil in your repertoire (that's almond oil - did you know?). Light oils such as squalane, argan or jojoba oil are great for the transition. You can also use these very well for your hair and have a multi-purpose product, even if your skin may not need any extra oil at the moment. Hair longs for moisture and protection in summer too, especially curly hair.

But back to skin care. I'd like to give you an example of how I adapt my routine throughout the year:

I use these products all year round:

As you can see, there isn't really much that changes in my routine. There isn't much that is added or taken away and I use up many of the products, such as the facial toner, every six months anyway, so I can alternate between them without putting a product on hold.

By the way, it's not just the skin that changes with the seasons and external influences, but also the hair. In winter, all the wearing of hats and scarves can make it "rough", lose its shine, and perhaps even tend to dry out more quickly. In summer, the sun, salt water and perhaps more frequent washing are particularly demanding. In both cases, an extra portion of moisture can't hurt. The products in the hair care line are the right choice. And if you tend to have flat hair with an oily scalp, I recommend our volume products . Of course, the different lines can also be wonderfully combined. Browse through and find your perfect care!

3. Protection from the outside: clothing that protects your skin from the cold

However, proper care alone does not protect our skin from cold, wind and weather. What we use to keep ourselves warm on the outside plays a major role here, because the skin wants to be able to breathe and not be suffocated. Natural materials such as wool, alpaca or cashmere, for example, manage the balancing act between keeping warm and letting it breathe.

Hessnatur has been producing sustainable clothing from natural materials for over 45 years. Their concept is similar to ours: we put people and the planet first. With timeless designs made from natural materials, your skin is protected in a particularly gentle way in autumn and winter.

Materials that protect your skin from the cold:

Organic virgin wool
New wool has a very useful property: it regulates body temperature so that we don't get cold, but at the same time no heat builds up. Wool is also self-cleaning, as water droplets, dirt and dust have a hard time getting into the fiber. So it is perfectly sufficient to air the garment instead of constantly washing it. This not only saves water, but also energy and time.

Fine hair
It sounds strange at first, but you're sure to find something familiar in camel, cashmere, mohair and yak. These natural fibres are soft on the skin, keep you wonderfully warm and look super cuddly on top of that. Hessnatur checks the origin very carefully and demands great transparency from the manufacturers, who have to meet strict guidelines.

alpaca
You are probably familiar with alpaca wool. It is particularly popular because it is very light, heat-regulating and super soft. At Hessnatur, the alpaca products are processed in Peru, from the hair to the finished favorite sweater, jacket, etc. In this way, they help shepherds in the Andes who look after the wild animals, support yarn suppliers and embroiderers, and save CO2 with a closed textile chain on site. This level of commitment suits them well - and you too.

Rhön wool from Germany.
Rhön wool has hardly been used since the 1970s, which has led to a sharp decline in the Rhön sheep population. In order to support the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve, Hessnatur started a project to preserve this breed in 2001 and has been making robust jackets with the wool ever since.

  5. Take more time for the things that give you energy and relax you

Admittedly, you can do the last point at any time of year, but I think that autumn offers a very special opportunity for it. Summer is over: the time when you are out and about a lot, constantly running from friends to parties, to the lake and back. And I don't know about you, but I long to have a bit of a rest to gather new energy. Ultimately, a relaxed mindset will also have a positive effect on your skin. After all, it reacts more or less sensitively to stress and emotional strain. So: let's just plan a little more time for ourselves this autumn, without any stress or appointments. Are you in?
